According to The American Legion’s
notification letter, signed by Legion National Commander
Clarence E. Hill: “The GIFF was selected to receive this
honor because of its support of one of The American Legion’s
corporate goals: promoting the honorable nature of military
service. Since 2007, the annual festival has honored works
that exclusively celebrate the successes and sacrifices of the
American military through the medium of film. As the GIFF Web
site states, you present films ‘that honor the heroic stories
of the American Armed Forces and the worldwide struggle for
freedom and liberty.’”
Past recipients of this award
include: Meet the Press host Tim Russert; Entertainer Wayne
Newton, NBC Anchorman Tom Brokaw; Actor/Economist Ben Stein;
CNN’s Lou Dobbs; James V. Kimsey, chairman emeritus, America
On-line; ABC News Correspondent Jack Smith; famed cartoonist
Bill Mauldin; Gordon Gund, chairman of the Foundation Fighting
Blindness; former Secretary of Education William J. Bennett;
Lowell Thomas; Red Skelton; and Jack Valenti, to name a few.
“This is a tremendous honor and a
credit to all of the talented filmmakers we have had the good
fortune to showcase at the GI Film Festival in our first three
years,” said GI Film Festival co-founder Brandon Millett. “We
of course want to extend special thanks to the sponsors,
advisors, volunteers and friends who helped make this award
possible. We are grateful for all of your support and
guidance.”
“Our mission from the beginning
has been to honor the service and sacrifice of the American
veteran. What a special honor to be recognized by The
American Legion, one of the nation’s most respected veteran
service organizations,” said GI Film Festival co-founder Major
Laura Millett. “We’re very proud of the growing reputation of
our film festival and we look forward to building on this
success in 2010 and beyond.”
