The
GI Film Festival, which will be held May 13-17, 2009 at the
Carnegie Institution in
Washington
,
DC
, is pleased to announce that the 2009 festival will feature
the highly anticipated HBO film “Taking Chance” starring
actor Kevin Bacon. “Taking Chance,” which premieres on HBO
February 21, 2009, was an official selection at the 2009
Sundance Film Festival (Dramatic Competition).
A
full synopsis of the film appears below. However, in short,
“Taking Chance,”
chronicles the emotional journey taken by Lt. Col. Michael
Strobl as he escorts the body of a fallen Marine hero, Lance
Corporal Chance Phelps, back to his hometown of
Dubois
,
Wyoming
.
“‘Taking
Chance’ has one simple yet critical mission: to document the
last journey of a fallen hero with respect, dignity, and
honor,” said GI Film Festival Chairman Stephen K. Bannon.
“This film is emblematic of the very best values of our
nation’s military, and it is a perfect fit for the GI Film
Festival, which gives voice to films that honor the successes
and sacrifices of American GIs.”
GI
Film Festival co-founders Brandon Millett and Laura
Law-Millett reviewed “Taking Chance” at HBO’s
headquarters in
New York
during a private screening for veterans on February 12.
“We
are so proud to partner with HBO Films which has demonstrated
a deep commitment to the American Armed Forces through its
programming,” said GI Film Festival Co-Founder Brandon
Millett, noting prior HBO military-related productions such as
“Band of Brothers” and “Generation Kill.” “Taking
Chance is in the finest HBO tradition and we look forward to
focusing public attention on this important film.”
“So
often we hear the statistics about how many of our heroes have
been lost in
Iraq
but that is where the conversation ends,” said GI Film
Festival Co-Founder Laura Law-Millett. “‘Taking Chance’
provides us with a sense of comfort in knowing our fallen
heroes are loved and respected right up until they moment they
reach their final resting place. This film grips you from the
beginning and doesn’t let go.”
