Bedford : The Town They Left Behind

On June 6, 1944, members of a National Guard unit comprised largely of volunteers from Bedford , Virginia , joined hundreds and hundreds of fellow soldiers in the terrible assault on Normandy ’s Omaha Beach . Of 35 men from Bedford , 19 died in the opening moments of what would come to be known as D-Day. On a per capita basis, Bedford lost more soldiers that day than anyplace else in the United States . Military Miracles: Military Miracles chronicles the first 30 days of the 1300 Marines of the 1st Battalion 5th Marine Regiment as they battled their way through the deserts of Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. It features miraculous stories of survival in the face of certain death, as told by the soldiers who lived them. The stories are revisited through compelling interviews, exciting re-enactments and archival battlefield footage. Running Time: 57 Minutes

Seeds of Victory: 'The Seeds of Victory' is a documentary that tells the story of 6 seniors on the 2004 Army Football team, the last class to enter the West Point Academy before 9/11. These young men had their lives turned upside down and must progress from blocking sleds to sweeping for mines, from penalty flags to prisoners of war, from body blocks to body bags. This is an inspiration film about a group of young men who dare to respond to the call of service and greatness. Their dreams do not consist of NFL glory, but rather of greatness in combat. Art in the Face of War

Art in the Face of War is a feature documentary on eight World War II Veterans/Artists who recount their service experience and their use of art for journalism, as a tactical tool and to preserve their own sanity. They served in all theaters of operation and in all branches of the U.S. military, including the once-secret Army division known as The Deception Corps. Their powerful imagery -some done on the spot, some done years later from haunting memories- will enlighten, challenge, even amuse, showing that war is hell but that creativity can exisit in the face of destruction. Running Time: 76 Minutes

Taking Chance Red Carpet Premiere

7:00 - 8:30 pm:  VIP reception celebrating the launch of the new USO magazine "On Patrol."  The reception will be held in the Carnegie Institution Rotunda.

 

9:00 - 11:00 pm:  GIFF Premiere of the HBO film "Taking Chance," which chronicles the emotional journey taken by Lt. Col. Michael Strobl as he escorts the body of a fallen Marine hero, Lance Corporal Chance Phelps, back to his hometown of Dubois , Wyoming .  Invited participants include actor Kevin Bacon and Director Ross Katz.  A Q&A session will follow the film screening.
